Congratulations to Dr. Yuesu Chen for his FNRS grant!
Yuesu CHEN was granted a 3-year FNRS Research Fellowship (Chargé de Recherches) under the supervision of Professor Jean-Christophe M. MONBALIU for his proposal aiming at the preparation of dinitrogen trioxide (N2O3) and its application in organic synthesis. Nitrosation reactions are paramount for the integration of nitrogen atoms into organic molecules, both in lab and industrial scales. Dinitrogen trioxide is a powerful nitrosating agent that outperforms other existing nitrosating agents in terms of high reactivity and appealing atom-economy. His proposal relies on meso- and microfluidic reactors coupled with Process Control Technologies (PAT), including in-line spectrometry (IR, NMR, UV-Visible) and sensors (pressure, temperature). His work will focus on the properties of pure N2O3 and its concentrated solutions as well as the reactivity of N2O3 towards carbon nucleophiles, expecting a safe, efficient, and scalable protocol for the nitrosative transformations using N2O3 at high concentrations to be established.

Yuesu Chen received his PhD in Chemical Sciences (Dr. rer. nat.) at the University of Graz (Austria) in February 2020. His doctoral thesis, under the supervision of Professor C. Oliver KAPPE, aimed at studying synthetic organic reactions under extreme conditions in flow. After receiving his PhD, he spent 3 years working as a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Integrated Technology and Organic Synthesis (CiTOS) under the umbrella of Prof. J.-C. M. Monbaliu’s FNRS Incentive Grant for Research (MIS). He developed a flow platform for N2O3 chemistry.
